Grady | 24″x30″ Oil on canvas – A portrait painting by Mark B. Goodson.

“I noticed Grady right away. While walking the streets of Philadelphia as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, I often saw Grady at, or near, the corner of Broad and Arch streets. He was visually, artistically appealing and I knew right away I wanted to do a painting of him. I began by saying “Hi” as I passed and gradually moved thru exchanging names and later having conversations with him, mostly him telling me his stories and expressing his strongly held opinions.I learned of his doing some preaching in his younger years and serving two tours

I learned of his doing some preaching in his younger years and serving two tours of duty for the USA. After almost three years of relationship building, I finally let him know I wanted to do a painting of him and asked if I could take his photograph? At first he was upset, thinking I was being like a tourist who simply wanted to take a pic of a street attraction. Thankfully his friend Amit Patel helped Grady understand that I was an artist and I wanted to paint his portrait. After being assured, Grady calmed down and was a willing model.

This portrait of Grady was to be the last artwork I did while a student at PAFA. I took it out onto the sidewalk to show Grady. He was delighted with the painting, as were many of his friends on the street who gathered to see it. The excitement was like a mini festival, it was fun, I will always remember it”
